Library liaisons must be familiar with an institution’s collection development policy and insert themselves into the process of constantly reviewing and adapting this document as necessary. Liaisons must be open to and actively seek suggestions on a regular basis and must also be familiar with a library’s process of handling specific requests for materials and resources. They must play a role in determining how the library’s collections will be assessed and must spend time considering the results of such assessments and implications for the future. Library liaisons must also have an understanding of the acquisitions process for both print and electronic materials. Last, liaison librarians must understand the budgeting process at their college or university and positively influence discussions, always with the idea of better serving critical constituencies.
